Should you get married during Mercury retrograde?

For some, this is not so much a question of should but what happens WHEN you get married during Mercury retrograde?   For me life goes on whether Mercury is retrograde or not.  For astrologers this is something to avoid! However, sometimes the ideal date is not within reach and going ahead with something like a wedding outweighs waiting.

“I need to plan ahead. When exactly is Mercury Retrograde next?”

The clever kids at the blog software company -Wordpress.com flicked this quote on my dashboard the other day and it made me smile.  It’s the kinda thing you’d say to a struggling writer during Mercury retrograde.

“There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.” W. Somerset Maugham

We are now well out of the shadow of the last Mercury retrograde and life is back to our old normal, hopefully with a new twist.   The next Mercury retrograde occurs on July 14th and lingers until August 8th.  If  you are concerned about traveling during a Mercury retrograde, signing a contract, buying  something new like a car etc, start planning now.   Schedule home repairs, cleaning, decluttering, and projects to be finished (but not launched) for the next go-round.

The pattern and fabric was designed by an amazing quilt person from Colorado – Nancy Havlerson.  The way she put the fabric design together with each piece in the quilt is inspired and you could feel that with each piece as it was added to make the whole picture. I found this wrought iron lamp in the trash area of our building.. well a place that folks leave good stuff for others to take home – over 10 years ago.   It was missing the hardware for the lamp socket, the shade and the plug /cord looked like it was from the 20′s.   I had hopes of refinishing and re-wiring it, but it sat in my bedroom forever serving as a clothes-rack more than anything else.   During this Mercury retrograde I was finally inspired to think… “Well what could it possibly take to re-wire a lamp?” and set out for the Home Depot to find out.  It actually took the MRx standard 4 trips to the store to figure it out but finally I got the right pieces and with the help of one good friend with the proper tool (I needed a wire stripper) it was effortlessly accomplished in 20 minutes.

What is really great about this accomplishment is that the hardwiring of a lamp is no longer a mystery to me.  In the future, I think I can fearlessly tackle a lamp repair job without waiting 10 years!

Moving from Paper to Bytes: The other day a colleague of mine and I were discussing the futility of making a manual for any new thing the organization is putting in place. If you don’t have a manual every one of a certain age, asks for it, and the lack of a manual becomes the reason and frustration about why no one can learn the new thing going on. However, when someone does take the time to document the miniscule steps involved in a new procedure and produces the PDF version and the paper version, it’s intended use is rare. Mostly it becomes scrape paper for telephone messages, or takes up room in a piece of furniture nearing extinction – the filing cabinet. Have you noticed this sort of scenario in your life?

Often, our reluctance to learn new ways of doing things and integrating digital versions of it has to do with learning over-load and the lack of time to integrate one more new thing in our system. While I generally love learning something new, I too have found myself signing up for the ‘new thing’, getting the username and password, reading the orientation pages, and then running out of time, promised myself I would return to do the next step. However, if I don’t return very soon, chances are good I never will or worse, if I do, I sign up all over again as I don’t recall being there before!

One of the finer points of being aligned for the energy of Mercury going retrograde is that it naturally prompts us to take integration time and review all of the new things we’ve been busy with in our lives. It’s a great time to actually read the new version of a manual, to play with the options of your new gizmo, to figure out all it can do for you. It’s a great time to practice learning these things and to reflect on the actual HOW of your learning – because that too may be changing. For example, I recently received a Kobo Vox (like Kindle Fire) as wonderful gift. I wasn’t sure that I would like reading a book on it. What I discovered was that it was not only a different experience, but I actually read faster! On reflection, my reading style has definitely changed. Would love to know if there is research on this, but what I think is happening is that instead of ‘reading’ each word left to right as with a paper document, I am taking in the page like a picture which is faster. Once I noticed this peculiarity of reading on a device, I found myself now actively engaged in acquiring books and resorting to my new toy whenever I get a moment.

Repatterning the resonance of our experience of Mercury retrograde.

Mercury is soon retrograde and the trickster planet has already been toying with me! My computer monitor suddenly collapsed this past week, I’ve been working through cold symptoms and to add to my misery, now 2 of the lamps in my apartment – you know the ones you count on to light the whole room have also died.

Sure it’s nothing insurmountable, just inconvenient but in a day gone by, this sort of sequence of events would have left me agitated and feeling slightly victimized. Julie Simmons and I have been doing the Aligned for Mercury retrograde repatternings since April 6th 2004.   If you are new here, it’s a program where we apply Resonance Repatterning healing system to the issues of Mercury retrograde, combining my talents as the repatterner, and the professional astrology knowledge of Julie Simmons.  Back then just organizing the AMR program could invoke the worst of the trickster in my life. This past week I was noticing how I just flowed with the circumstances, took Julie’s advice to take the time to rest and trust it will all work out. However, while I was ‘looking’ at the situation of life unfolding during the shadow leading up to Mercury retrograde, I noticed that synchronistic good things also happened. I have to list them and brag a little about what can happen when you are aligned for Mercury Retrograde:

- before setting out to go lamp shopping I decided to go online and check my bank balance which I may not have normally done until the end of the month. Good thing I did as a large cheque had not cleared. Checking in with the company in question, it turns out they had been experiencing petty theft break-ins lately, so they asked me to put a stop payment to be sure and re-issue the cheque.
- While shopping for a replacement lamp, I lucked into a sale and picked up 2 additional lamps and a supply of lightbulbs – which I rarely do. This was fortuitous as within 2 days of purchase a total of 3 of my older lamps were now expired and light bulbs were needed by the others! I am also laughing and quietly amazed at the prospect of what else can be read into my light ordeal!
- Lastly, I noticed that a new wave of organizing energy has hit me and that while resting I have been fixated on ‘stuff’ I now plan to either repair or get rid of, and shelves and cupboards I am re-organizing. Instead of going to the quilt store for a new project, I am heading over to the Home Depot for a new broom smiling all the way!

Take a Pause Then Decide

Yes I know it makes perfect sense.  After all astrologers will tell you to slow down, post pone the big-ticket decisions, don’t start or initiate anything new unless in the planning phases only.   Still life goes on.   Your work needs accomplishing and decisions do need to be make.  When you think about it every waking moments puts us at a point of choice where a decision must be made.   The focus of consciousness statement above gives us a strategy.    Go ahead and make those choices but help yourself by liberally using a pause button.  Listen extensively, ask questions, be curious and explore the answers thoroughly before you decide.  This will be easy enough for analytic people who cannot be tied to one option.  Mercury retrograde will seem like a great time.

For the bottom-liners, those of you who like to get to the point (oops –should have mentioned this earlier in the discussion!)  – listening carefully, reflecting and asking questions may be a challenge.

Align for Mercury Retrograde and Take Time for Reflection

The overall general theme of Mercury retrograde is about reflection. It offers us a time to be more reflective about life on planet earth, to contemplate and to create order by eliminating things that block our clarity. Therefore it is generally a good time to write, edit meditate, retreat and organize.

Based on the sign it is in at the time it makes this journey, we find more specific direction about what is required at this time. This period of Mercury Retrograde will be in the sign of Aries retrograding back to Pisces. I will write more about the theme of this particular one soon.
