Understanding Mercury Retrograde: A Journey Through Chaos
There is no doubt that the world is all shook up these days. As we wait for whatever is going to happen, we do our best to ‘keep calm and carry on’. Mercury retrograde just days before a New Moon reminds us not to have answers, not even questions but to listen and pay attention to signs and symbols: in our dreams, in the variety of synchronicities that happen along our way, in the unexpected messages. Not because they will give us the answers but because these things help us to know what’s true for us. Meaning is subjective and idiosyncratic. To one person a crow is a symbol of intelligence, to another a squawky pest. Interpretation is in the eye/mind of the interpreter. We aren’t looking for agreement, rather we are challenged to use our intuition, to trust our participation in the web of connection we share with all life forms on a living planet (perhaps universe).
Mercury interacts with Jupiter, Saturn and Venus (remember the Venus Star Point back in June?) underscoring that this has been a year when anybody with a heart has been overwhelmed by the suffering which seems unstoppable, a year in which it seems that the underpinnings of civil society are falling to shreds. It can be difficult to sort the truths from the lies.
On the other hand… people have risen to the occasion to help each other in the face of great difficulties like hurricanes and floods, even war. And more. We can’t just focus on the good things but neither do we need to obsess about the bad. The first cause of staving off chaos is to find your own center. Mercury: trickster, mind maker, conductor of the orchestra of our never-ending stream of thoughts wants us to step back and consider all things.
The conjunction of Mercury and the Sun always sheds light on the retrograde period. On December 5th (the day before Mars goes retrograde) Mercury and the Sun meet at 14* Sagittarius, a hot button point for Jupiter, Saturn and Venus this year. A powerful day to look for synchronicities and messages of all sorts that will align you with the energies of Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius.
